Interview with Amaia and Libe (THE EKO LAB)
Tell us about yourselfs... Who are you, what do you do, where are you from? 👧
Amaia: At the age of 8, I came to live in the Cantabrian Sea, instead of the Mediterranean. I come from a French-speaking and Colombian family, and I've always liked languages and traveling. I studied Business Management and Marketing and specialized in the creative industries.
Libe: More than from Bilbao, I would say I'm from the Old Town of Bilbao. Despite studying Social Education, the art world has always attracted me a lot, because I understand fashion as human art, because people are identities and ideas. Right now, I work in a neighborhood store called Serie B, it's a sustainable fashion local trade.
When did your passion for fashion and sustainability emerge? 🍃
A: When I had the opportunity to work on projects that promote sustainable fashion, my passion for the textile industry began in Lyon, France. Since then, I have been able to work with different fashion brands and in 2019 I organized the Fashion Revolution Week Bilbao.
L: After three years of working in a fast fashion multinational, I noticed unnecessary consumption and polluting and exploding routes that follow the garments that reach our hands. So, I decided to leave the job and work in the opposite direction, meeting Amaia on that road.
Let´s talk about The Eko Lab project. How was the idea born? With what intention or objectives did you create it? 💡
A: We met through the Fashion Revolution in Bilbao, preparing an event inspired by the London Open Studio, where designers open the doors of their studies to the public. COVID-19 prevented the event and thanks to the Bilbao Aurrera Plan of the City of Bilbao we have recycled the original idea in THE EKO LAB.
L: In Bilbao we saw the need for events related to fashion, beyond the space related to sustainability. We wanted to extend the work of local designers with extensive experience to the citizens, open the doors of the workshops and reflect on consumption.
What part of your job do you enjoy doing the most? And what do you consider to be the biggest challenge?
A: Make an idea come true. The greatest challenge is the ability to adapt to any change and, above all, to maintain professionalism and creativity.
L: I love to create new personal relationships, expanding my network. When I meet new designers that open the doors of their studios and allow us to be part of the creative process, they make me very happy. There are many challenges, but perhaps the hardest one is what I have with my own self, trying to live every day through the values of sustainability in my identity and in my actions, because it's a model of life, it's philosophy.
What should a designer do to be able to participate in your workshop as a participant or as a professor?
A + L: If they want to participate, they must ensure that their work follows the path of sustainability, by producing local or with the explanation of the origin of the fiber, offering decent work conditions, etc. If they pursue and defend sustainable values, we´ll work very easily with them because we believe in the diversity of fashion.
What can we expect to find in THE EKO LAB in the future?
A + L: At the moment we´re consolidating the structure of THE EKO LAB, defining our objectives and aspirations correctly, creating new relationships, and more. However, very soon, we´ll hold a special event along with the Kutxa Kultur Fashion Foundation of San Sebastian, and in November we´ll participate in the Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week. Tell us something about yourself that many people don't know (we don't tell anyone 😜)
A: I really like to travel, and this fact led to coach surfing lessons in Iceland.
L: I'm in love with the classic costumes of the 19th century and I've seen all the series and movies about it, the last one, called Bridgerton.
What is your favourite place in the Basque Country?
A: This summer I fell in love with Chillida Leku.
L: Despite being from Biscay, I´ve always loved Iparralde, especially Guetary, Biarritz, Baiona and the surrounding villages.
What's the thing you like most about Bihotz Paris?
A: I know Aran (Co-founder of Bihotz Paris) since the University and she's a great friend. It inspires me and makes me very proud to see the work they´ve done and everything they´ve achieved.
L: I believe that, when France and Basque Country come together, mixing customs, there is a very nice energy. Bohemian air, artistic but with nature is what I get from Bihotz Paris.
What's your favourite word in Basque? ❤️
A: Amalur.
L: The word that I use most is Maitea, dear, and I use it for the loved ones in my environment.

A: I think Virginia Woolf is incomparable.

Elkarrizketa Amaia eta Liberekin (THE EKO LAB)
Hitz egiguzue zuei buruz Amaia eta Libe ... Nor zarete, zertan egiten duzue lan, nongoak zarete? 👧
Amaia: 8 urte nituela, Mediterraneo itsasoaren ordez, Kantauri itsasora bizitzera etorri nintzen. Familia frankofono eta kolonbiar batetik nator, eta betidanik hizkuntzak eta bidaiak gustuko izan ditut. Enpresen Kudeaketa eta Marketina ikasi nuen eta industria sortzaileen sektorean espezializatu naiz.
Libe: Bilbotarra baino, Bilboko Alde Zaharrekoa naizela esango nuke. Nahiz eta Gizarte Hezkuntza ikasi, artearen munduak betidanik asko erakarri nau, moda arte gisa ulertzen baitut, pertsonok geure nortasuna eta ideiak adierazteko beste modu bat delako. Momentu honetan Serie B deituriko auzoko denda batean egiten dut lan, lekuko eta moda jasangarria bultzatzen dituen komertzioa da.
Noiz piztu zitzaizuen moda eta jasangarritasunarekiko grina? 🍃
A: Moda jasangarria bultzatzen duten proiektuetan lan egiteko aukera izan nuenean hasi zen nire ehungintzarekiko pasioa Lyon-en, Frantzian. Harrezkero, moda marka desberdinekin lan egiteko aukera izan dut eta 2019-an Fashion Revolution Week Bilbao antolatu nuen.
L: Hiru urtez fast fashioneko multinazional batean lan egin ondoren, beharrik gabeko kontsumoaz ohartu nintzen, baita, gure eskuetara heltzen diren arropek jarraitzen dituzten bide kutsagarri eta esplotatzaileak. Beraz, lana utzi eta kontrako norabidean lan egitea erabaki nuen, bide horretan Amaia ezagutuz.
Hitz egiguzue The Eko Lab proiektuaz. Nola sortzen da zuen ideia? Zein intentzio edo helbururekin sortu zenuten? 💡
A: Bilboko Fashion Revolution bidez ezagutu ginen, Londresen Open Studioan inspiratutako ekitaldi bat prestatzen, non, diseinatzaileek beraien estudioen ateak irekitzen dizkiote publikoari. COVID-19ak ekitaldia eragotzi zuen eta Bilboko Udalaren Bilbao Aurrera Planari esker, jatorrizko ideia THE EKO LAB-en birziklatu dugu.
L: Bilbon modaren inguruko ekitaldien beharra ikusten genuen, hare gehiago jasangarritasunarekin harremana zuen espazioaren beharra. Tokiko zein eskarmentu handia duten diseinatzaileen lanak hiritarrei luzatu nahi genien, tailerren ateak ireki eta kontsumoaren hausnarketa gauzatzeko grina genuen helburu.
Zein da zuen lanpostuan gehien egiten disfrutatzen duzuen ekintza? Eta zein da erronka handiena?
A: Ideia bat errealitate bihurtzea. Erronkarik handiena aldaketetara egokitzeko gaitasuna izatea, eta, batez ere, profesionaltasunari eta sormenari eustea dela esango nuke.
L: Pertsonalki harreman berriak sortzea oso gustuko dut, lan sarea handituz. Diseinatzaile berriak ezagutzen ditudanean eta haien estudioen ateak ireki eta sortze prozesuaren parte egiten gaituztenean oso zoriontsu sentiarazten naute. Erronka anitzak daude baina agian gogorrena nik nire buruarekiko daukadana da, egunero jasangarritasunaren baloreak nire nortasunean eta ekintzetan bermatzen saiatzen naiz, bizi eredua bait da, filosofia da.
Zer egin behar du diseinatzaile batek zuen tailerrean parte hartu ahal izateko tailerreko partehartzaile edo irakasle gisa?
A + L: Parte hartu nahi izan ezkero, haien lana jasangarritasunaren bidea jarraitzen duela bermatu behar dute bai tokiko lana gauzatzen, edo zuntzaren jatorria azaltzen, lan duina eskaintzen etab. Jasangarritasunaren baloreak haiekin bat egiten badute, oso erraz egingo dugu lan, modaren aniztasunean sinisten bait dugu.
Zer aurkitu dezakegu etorkizunean The Eko Lab-en?
A + L: Momentuz THE EKO LAB-en egitura sendotzen gaude, gure helburuak eta nahiak ondo zehaztez, harreman berriak sortzen etab. Hala ere laster Donostiako Kutxa Kultur Moda fundazioarekin bat ekitaldi berezi bat burutuko dugu eta azaroan Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week-ean parte hartuko dugu. Esaiguzue zuen buruari buruz askok ezagutzen ez duten zerbait (ez diogu inori esango 😜 )
A: Asko gustatzen zait bidaiatzea, eta horrek Islandia-n coachsurfing egitera eraman ninduen.
L: XIX.mendeko jantzi klasikoez maiteminduta nago eta horren inguruan dauden serie eta pelikula guztiak ikusi ditut, azkenengoa, Bridgerton deiturikoa.
Zein da zuen Euskal Herriko lekurik gogokoena?
A: Uda honetan Chillida Lekuarekin maitemindu naiz.
L: Nahiz eta bizkaitarra izan, Iparralde beti maite izan dut, bereziki Guetary, Biarritz, Baiona eta inguruko herriak. Euskal ohiturak frantsesekin bat egitean, aire oso artistikoa arnasten dela iruditzen zait.
Zer da Bihotz Paris markari buruz gehien gustatzen zaizuena?
A: Aran (Bihotz Paris markaren sortzaileetako bat) unibertsitatetik ezagutzen dut eta lagun mina da. Berak eta talde osoak egin duzuen lana eta lortu duzuen guztia ikusteak inspiratu egiten nau eta oso harro sentiarazten nau.
L: Aurreko galderan erantzun dudan moduan, Frantzia eta Euskal Herria bat egiten dutenean, ohiturak nahastean, energia oso ederra sortzen dela uste dut. Aire bohemio, artistikoa baina naturarekin bat egiten duena da Bihotz Parisek luzatzen nauena.

A: Amalur
L: Gehien erabiltzen dudana Maitea da, maitia, inguruko pertsona maiteentzat erabiltzen dudan hitza.
